The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special debuts tomorrow on Disney+ and is an absolute delight. While it may be initially eponymously connected to the infamous Holiday Special of 1978, other than the use of “Life Day” to indicate a day of celebration, the two are (perhaps mercifully) not related at all. In true LEGO fashion, the story incorporates humor, charm, adventure, and whimsy to tell an endearing story (that I won’t spoil here) emphasizing some timeless lessons featured in this mythology. The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is sure to be a crowd pleasure for fans of all ages.
The special takes place shortly after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, with Rey trying to find a way to connect her knowledge of the Force and the teachings of the Jedi to her new student, Finn. The majority of the characters are silly (and I mean that in the best way possible) versions of themselves, except for Rey, who is reflective and a bit angst-ridden about her place as a teacher. Rey travels through the Star Wars timeline to gather knowledge which may help her padawan become more in tune with the Force, which provides wonderful moments of nostalgia and Back To The Future-style angst. Even though this is a LEGO version of the character, there is a nice amount of pathos sprinkled in that I found captivating. In fact, there are a number of good story beats here that may promote some solid conversation with your own students or children.
This was a pleasant surprise, but there are also plenty of laughs and thrills to keep you on the edge of your seat. While the majority of the biggest laughs were revealed in the trailer, the character of Palpatine is really funny, as is Kylo Ren, and there is an excellent Darth Vader confrontation that I never expected to see which really works. Luke Skywalker has a unique place in the special too, which is playful and exciting. Again, I won’t spoil anything, but it is really well done.
There is much to enjoy about the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special. It is family-friendly, entertaining, and chock full of Star Wars adventure, nostalgia, and humor. Plus, it has some insightful things to say about character, finding your place, and more. The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special debuts exclusively on Disney+ on November 17th and is an excellent way to start off your holiday season.
