So, we’re less than a month away from Celebration, and I’m so excited I’m actually having trouble sleeping. I have yet to actually receive my tickets yet, but let’s hope that changes soon. I was asked what I was most excited about regarding the convention, and the assumption was that it was the toys. However, as I thought about my answer, I realized I have spent very little time thinking about the loot I’m going to procure from vendors. I’m not even thinking about which panels I’ll be attending. I’m most excited about getting to spend some time in the same room with all the new friends I’ve made over the last few years through Facebook, podcasting, and of course, my involvement with Coffee With Kenobi. I really couldn’t care less about meeting any “celebs” or stocking my MarvinDog Media messenger bag with toys. Well, that last part is a bit of an overstatement, I have no doubt that I will come home with quite a few items that I just couldn’t pass up, but it’s not the cornucopia of “stuff” that is keeping me awake. I really cannot wait to meet everyone I’ve connected with.
However, I AM going to be on the “Collecting Track” at Celebration, and since this is my last blog before the convention, it seemed like an opportune time to talk about what I hope to find. Next month, I’ll reveal what I DID find, so this will be an exercise in “Does Jeff have any idea what to expect?”
I missed the last Celebration, and it was the first one that I had ever thought about attending. The items that drove me nuts to be missing were the Star Tots pins. I eventually got an R5-D4, but this year, I plan to commit a significant amount of my budget to the new set. I know I won’t be able to get them all, and that’s ok, because I’m not as much of a completist as I used to be. Incidentally, the completist mentality is the top of discussion on the latest minisode of Talking Toys with Taylor and Jeff, you can listen at http://marvindogmedia.com if you’re interested. You know I HAD to get at least one plug-in, right? ANYWHO, I have a list of about 5 to 7 Star Tots that I REALLY want to get my hands on, and 3 that are must-haves, so I think I’m in good shape.
Apart from the Star Tots, I’m not really sure what else has been announced, but I do have a few vintage items that I’m on the lookout for. I’m kind of obsessed with the Twin Pod Cloud Car, and I don’t have the die-cast version released on a card after the Empire Strikes Back came out. I would love to get one loose, and one on-card, if possible. I know they exist, it’s just a matter of finding one in decent shape, so I hope that I happen upon one at the show, and that I don’t have to pay a convention premium for it. My pie-in-the-sky acquisition would be a vintage Sandcrawler complete with radio control, but I know that’s a tall order so I’m not holding my breath.
Other than those few items, I’m really on the lookout for oddities, like the Dixie Cups I got a few months back, or the unopened Ewok Toothbrush that I inexplicably got as a kid and never opened. I love that sort of thing, because not only are they usually fairly affordable, but they really illustrate the breadth of influence that Star Wars has had on our culture.
So my shopping list is short and (mostly) attainable. I wonder what this means for Jeff, the Caffeinated Collector. Is my collecting gene on the fritz? Doubtful. Am I growing up? Impossible. Have I finally come to the point where I have all that I really NEED, and now I’m just looking for the items that I overlooked? Very possibly. Even so, I still have a long wantlist, but I find that my ambition isn’t that far removed from my reach these days, and It’s made me a much happier, more content collector. Or, maybe I’m just lowering my expectations now that life has beaten my child-like optimism out of me. JUST KIDDING!!! I still want ALL THE THINGS!
What about you guys? For those of you going to Celebration, do you have a shopping list, or are you waiting to see what you find? And for anyone who’s been before, is my shopping list reasonable, or am I setting myself up for heartache and despair? Let me know!
