Star Wars Reads Day 2014: How Will You Celebrate?

Tom & Dan at SW Reads

Star Wars Reads Day 2014 is upon us, and everywhere you look, fans from across the globe are celebrating! Combining Star Wars and Literature is an excellent way to encourage reading, as well as another great reason to talk Star Wars with family and friends. From the Official Site:

Disney Publishing Worldwide and its publishing partners announced today the third annual Star Wars Reads Day, to be held October 11, 2014. Last year, Star Wars authors and costumed volunteers participated in over 2,000 Star WarsReads Day events across North America and, for the first time, around the world. On October 11 of this year, Star Wars fans, authors, and artists will again come together in this multi-publisher initiative that celebrates reading and Star Wars. Participating publishing partners include Abrams, Chronicle Books, Dark Horse, Del Rey, Disney Book Group, DK, Klutz, Quirk Books, Random House Audio, Scholastic, and Workman Publishing.

Star Wars in the Classroom has an amazing event planned at the Roper Mountain Science Center in Greenville, SC, featuring the Mando Mercs and the Carolina Garrison (The 501st lists Star Wars Reads Day as one of their busiest days of the year!), and at the school where I teach, we celebrated Star Wars Reads Day with trivia (students were even allowed to research answers), having students share passages from their favorite Star Wars books, and we even had a dramatic reading of Ian Doescher’s The Empire Striketh Back. Our school librarian, Tom Gross shared with me why this is an excellent opportunity to promote literacy:

“When I think about Star Wars and literacy, Star Wars is a story that everybody knows something about. For students who may not be readers, a Star Wars book may be as intimidating because they know the characters, and they know the settings, so they may be more likely to take a chance. Plus, it’s just flat-out a great story!”

Tom and I also brought a few collectibles to present in the library display case, prompting some excitement amongst students, faculty, and staff alike!

Because I was out of town last weekend, I did not get to celebrate Star Wars Reads Day … officially. 😉 Instead, I donned one of my favorite Star Wars t-shirts — “Honk If You Like Star Wars” — and walked up and down New Orleans’ Royal Street. While there weren’t any cars driving down the narrow road (who drives in the French Quarter if you don’t have to? 😉 ), I did get a few comments — of the friendly kind! 🙂

(by the way, while I really was doing a little shopping — that was my intent as I strolled down the street 😉 — this was a good way to spread some Star Wars cheer. At least I think so. 😉 lol)

If I’m home next year, I hope to celebrate it with a program at our local library. 🙂
