I'd been wondering when Marvel Comics was going to decide to give Lando Calrissian is own comics series. Just ahead of the start of Star Wars Celebration, the House of Ideas made it happen.
In an announcement made on Marvel's sister site, StarWars.com, the publisher revealed Thursday, April 16, that legal eagle and comics scribe Charles Soule is writing a five-issue mini-series that focuses on the Saga's second-most famous scoundrel, with art by critical and audience fave Alex Maleev.
The series begins in July, and is the fifth such title for Marvel since January, joining the wildly popular Star Wars, Darth Vader, Princess Leia and Kanan: The Last Padawan.
It's not going to be the last, either, given the earlier announcement that Greg Rucka will write Shattered Empire, a series that picks up just after the events of Return of the Jedi and what leads up to the December release of The Force Awakens.
Soule, for his part, told StarWars.com that his take on Lando pits the Rebel general, municipal administrator and gambler in the days before his exploits with the Rebel Alliance. Joining him in the tale is Lobot, as the two strive to swipe one the galaxy's granded ships.
“Before Cloud City, before his glorious Death Star run, Lando Calrissian was just a man trying to make his way through an uncaring universe determined not to recognize that he was undeniably the coolest man in the galaxy,” Soule told the website. ” But Lando’s got a plan to change all that… and it starts with the deal of a lifetime.”
For Lando fans, the series is a chance to come up with the answer to the question they've always wondered.
“Is Lando Calrissian the coolest character in all of Star Wars? Depends on who you ask, probably. But if you ask me, the answer is yes, and I plan to prove it with this story,” said Soule.
Matt Moore has been perpetrating journalism since 1985, reveling in Star Wars since 1977 and reading comics since 1974.
