Writer Greg Weisman will discuss Marvel’s fourth Star Wars comic, Kanan — The Last Padawan, in a 90-minute panel Sunday at the Long Beach Comic Expo.
Hosted by The Hollywood Reporter’s Aaron Couch, the two will talk about the upcoming first issue of the series — due out in April — and how the comic book developed out of Rebels and The Clone Wars. More importantly, they’ll examine where the series, in canon and illustrated by Pepe Larraz, will take Kanan Jarrus aka Caleb Dume after the fall of the Jedi and ahead of the events in A New Hope.
The first arc of The Last Padawan focuses on Kanan and Order 66, crucial to the saga’s history given its implications, White said. The story documents how Caleb Dume, padawan to Jedi Master Depa Billaba, survived Order 66 and implemented Obi-Wan Kenobi’s warning to avoid detection.
“Kanan is a former Jedi and, as everybody knows, all the Jedi were killed or attempted to be killed around Order 66,” Marvel editor Jordan D. White told Coffee With Kenobi in October. “The question is ‘How did Kanan survive?’ That’s what we’re going to be looking into. What happened to him on that fateful day and the time shortly thereafter.”
The panel starts at 12:30 and concludes at 2 p.m..
Matt Moore has been perpetrating journalism since 1985, reveling in Star Wars since 1977 and reading comics since 1974.
