Shattered_Empire_1_Noto_Cover Amid the hype and conjecture in the buildup to the December release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a key issue that is vexing fans old and new is simply: What happened in the three decades since the end of the events of Return of the Jedi.

Lucasfilm is looking to fill in the gaps in the coming months through books, including a Marvel Comics mini-series written by Greg Rucka and drawn by artist Marco Checchetto.

The creative team, announced on April 17 at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, is poised to dive deep into Star Wars canon, leading up to the film’s release in the pages of Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens — Shattered Empire No. 1.

Marvel’s Star Wars comics editor Jordan D. White says the series, due in September, is geared at answering many questions and pave the way to December’s film release.

“The world has been wondering what happened after the fall of the Empire since the credits first rolled on Return of the Jedi in 1983,” White said in a statement released by Marvel. “Now, on the dawn of the next chapter of the saga, we’re incredibly proud to be involved in revealing the events that happen immediately following the end of Return of the Jedi!”

Matt Moore has been perpetrating journalism since 1985, reveling in Star Wars since 1977 and reading comics since 1974.
