It seems like it was a long time ago when I began planning for one of this year’s biggest conventions, and now it is only a few days away. In the last year I’ve been to four cons, but I’m most excited for what is coming this month. As Emperor Palpatine said, I have waited a long time for this. I’ll be wearing one of my Coffee With Kenobi T-shirts, and I’ll be able to see friends I haven’t seen for months and meet new friends. There will be thousands of geeks and nerds from all over the country, and many from around the world. We will attend panels on subjects that interest us just so we can gain new perspectives on existing topics. There will be countless vendors filling thousands of square feet of convention center floor, peddling all of the newest items to hit the market. Hopefully there will be some big reveals, but if not it will still be a great time with friends.
My badges and tickets have been delivered, my hotel was booked months ago, travel plans have been made, and now all that remains is for the date to arrive. Obviously, I’m talking about the annual Utah Dental Convention! The yearly meeting of geeks talking about restoring teeth, extracting teeth, and cleaning teeth. It’s riveting! Who doesn’t get excited about that? But as it turns out: There…is…another…convention.
Okay, I’m also kind of excited about Star Wars Celebration this month. Actually I’m very excited about it. Okay, I’m so excited that if Uncle Owen told me I couldn’t go this year he’d be wearing that blue milk he loves so much! I can’t wait for Celebration!!! It will be my first SWC. I can’t wait to see the celebrities and the panels and the toys. I can’t wait to go to a convention fully dedicated to nothing but Star Wars. I can’t wait to finally meet in person all of you that I’ve gotten to know in the past several months. I’m looking forward to meeting all levels of Jedi: Jedi Masters, Jedi Knights, Padawans and a Mediocre Jedi. And especially everyone from Coffee With Kenobi.
In all actuality, a dental convention and Star Wars Celebration have a lot in common. There are geeks and nerds at both: my favorite kinds at Celebration, and then there are those at a dental convention. There is cosplay at both: actual costumes at Celebration, and a bunch of people in khakis and polos at dental conventions. I will be wearing Star Wars T-shirts at both so I hope security doesn’t escort me out of the dental convention. There will likely be new information revealed at both conventions. I’m hoping for a new The Force Awakens trailer at SWC, and I can’t think of anything that could compare to that at the dental convention. Unless someone has found a way to use a tooth as a Lightsaber crystal. At the dental convention we will talk about removing teeth, and at Celebration we will talk about removing limbs.
By the time you read this I will be recovering from the craziness of the dental convention and preparing for Star Wars Celebration. I am eager to find out what JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy have for us to kick off the convention. I’m just as excited to see everyone at the Coffee With Kenobi podcast panel right after JJ and KK!
