The Star Wars Canon Dispatch: June 2017

The Star Wars Canon Dispatch
June 2017

Welcome to The Star Wars Canon Dispatch, an unofficial monthly contextual look at the monthly releases in Star Wars storytelling. It was a comic heavy month, but some great additions to the narrative universe.

Rogue One, Issue #003
Jody Houser, writer / Paolo Villanelli, artist
Comic by Marvel
June 7, 2017

From the moment the Death Star makes its first test on the Holy City of Jehda through the moment Jyn finally meets her father, this comic covers a lot of ground adapting the Rogue One story for this medium. For the canon fans out there, you will notice a bit of a nod to Saw’s past as we know from The Clone Wars, one that did not make it into the film.

Star Wars: Darth Vader, Issue #001
Charles Soule, writer / Guiseppe Camuncoli, artist
Comic by Marvel
June 7, 2017

As if the camera kept rolling after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, we are told the story of Vader’s first actions after donning the suit that he is most known for. The Emperor sends him on a quest for his own lightsaber, bringing in some lore that has been developed through The Clone Wars and Ahoska.

Star Wars, Issue #032 – The Screaming Citadel: Part IV
Jason Aaron, writer / Salvador Larroca, artist
Comic by Marvel
June 14, 2017

As we continue to move through this cross over, the lines of good vs evil are blurred, as Doctor Aphra and Sana’s allegiances are tested, and 0-0-0 and BT-1 are, for once, not killing everything in sight. Continuing to fill the time between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, this is a story arc not to be missed.

Star Wars: Darth Maul, Issue #004
Cullin Bunn, writer / Luke Ross, artist
Comic by Marvel
June 21, 2017

This mini-series continues to develop a bit of the Maul we saw in The Phantom Menace, a Maul that we saw very little off. The Maul from The Clone Wars and Rebels was very different than the loyal Sith we see here, and gives us some great insight into the Sith philosophy and training practices.

Star Wars: Poe Dameron Annual, Issue #001
Robert Thompson, writer / Nicole Virella, artist
Comic by Marvel
June 21, 2017

This ongoing series gets its first annual as Poe goes on a mission after disobeying a direct order from the General. This issue is wedged in the same timeline as the ongoing series, filling in the gap between Before the Awakening and The Force Awakens.

Star Wars: Darth Vader, Issue #002
Charles Soule, writer / Guiseppe Camuncoli, artist
Comic by Marvel
June 21, 2017

Darth Vader, left alone on a planet by Palpatine, is ordered to locate, take, and make a Jedi Lightsaber his own, turning it to the red color that the Sith are known for. Find out how Vader finds his way and path in his new life as we continue to follow the birth to Darth Vader in this series.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Issue #008 – The Screaming Citadel: Part V
Kieren Gillen, writer / Andrea Broccardo, artist
Comic by Marvel
June 28, 2017

This issue wraps up the cross over between Star Wars and Doctor Aphra, as the end of the Screaming Citadel story approaches. Yet another stepping stone towards Luke’s quest to learn more about the force.

Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Issue #016
Charles Soule, writer / Angel Unzueta, artist
Comic by Marvel
June 28, 2017

We are getting quite a picture of Poe as he developed from the sure of himself pilot to the leader of Black Squadron we saw in The Force Awakens. It seems that the path to Lor San Tekka is on hold as Poe is sent on a different mission to support the resistance efforts.
