The Star Wars Canon Dispatch
July 2017

Welcome to The Star Wars Canon Dispatch, an unofficial monthly contextual look at the monthly releases in Star Wars storytelling. This month… Forces of Destiny. Oh… and that new book… we like new books!

Forces of Destiny
Short Form Animation by Lucasfilm (via YouTube).

If you have not checked out these clips, you should. There is some great additions to the canon of Star Wars and also plugs us into various time frames across the saga. The first eight were released in July, with the next slate due out in October.

  • “Sands of Jakku” – taking place during The Force Awakens as Rey and BB-8 travel back her home after BB-8 is rescued.
  • “BB-8 Bandits” – taking place during The Force Awakens as Rey and BB-8 travel to Niima outpost.
  • “Ewok Escape” – taking place during Return of the Jedi as Leia and Wicket travel to the Ewok Village.
  • “The Padawan Path” – taking place during The Clone Wars TV series.
  • “Beasts of Echo Base” – taking place during Empire Strikes Back, bringing the idea of a Wompa in Echo base back into canon.
  • “The Imposter Inside” – taking place during The Clone Wars TV series.
  • “The Stranger” – Taking place prior to Rogue One in Garel City, a location we saw frequented in Star Wars Rebels.
  • “Bounty of Trouble” – A great moment between Leia and Sabine, showing Leia’s early work for the Rebellion, taking place sometime after the first episode of Season 2 of Star Wars Rebels.

Rogue One, Issue #004
Jody Houser, writer / Emilio Laiso, artist
Comic by Marvel
July 5, 2017

Jyn Erso has finally reached her father, but its to late. Through this story we see the memories and history of Galen flash as he approaches the end of his life. We also get a cool moment between Bodhi Rook and K-2S0 as they go to steal the Imperial shuttle on Eadu. This issue takes us through the moment they leave Yavin 4 on the stolen Rogue One in an unauthorized mission to retrieve the Death Star plans.

Star Wars, Issue #033: Rebels in the Wild
Jason Aaron, writer / Salvador Larroca, artist
Comic by Marvel
July 5, 2017

This short, apparently one-shot story, shows us a bit of Luke and Leia together, briefly stranded on an island with the Empire hot on their tails. The surprise in this issue comes at the end, as the story focus transitions away from Luke and on to another, well known swindler.

Star Wars: Darth Vader, Issue #003
Charles Soule, writer / Giuseppe Camuncoli, artist
Comic by Marvel
July 12, 2017

Vader continues his quest to steal a lightsaber from a Jedi. His first task as the mechanical Vader with his uncontained rage, and it seems that the Jedi he seeks is eager to put a stop to him. There are some great canon nuggets int his book, discussing the practice of Barash. It would be interesting to see this concept show up in other places.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Issue #009
Kieron Gillen, writer / Kev Walker, artist
Comic by Marvel
July 12, 2017

With the Screaming Citadel behind her, Aphra take her now active glowy green rock thing-y and tries to turn a profit. But perhaps Triple Zero and BT-1 have their own ideas about how things should be done.

Star Wars: Darth Maul, Issue #005
Cullen Bunn, writer / Luke Ross, artist
Comic by Marvel
July 19, 2017

The final issue in the Darth Maul mini-series will wrap up this story of the kidnapped padawan with what Maul has been wanting all along. A duel to test his strength against a Jedi.

Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Issue #017 – War Stories, Part I
Charles Soule, writer / Angel Unzueta, artist
Comic by Marvel
July 19, 2017

A new story arc begins as Poe Dameron and team are on the look out for new recruits for the Resistance. Continuing to fill in Poe’s story prior to The Force Awakens, this new arc will start to give us some insight into some of Poe’s fellow pilots.

Christie Golden, author
Novel by Del Rey
July 25, 2017

Whereas Battlefront: Twilight Company novel gave us a war perspective from the side of the Rebellion, this time we are brought into the side of the Empire, as they form an elite squad of troops to infiltrate and destroy the remaining partisans loyal to Saw Garrera. Taking place shortly after the destruction of the first Death Star, this novel will do well to give us a unified picture of the events of Rogue One and A New Hope, being the first novel published after Rogue One dealing with that time frame.

Star Wars: Doctors Aphra, Issue #010
Kieron Gillen, writer / Kev Walker, artist
Comic by Marvel
July 26, 2017

Aphra has surrounded herself with some of the nastiest scum in the galaxy while Trips and Beetee are up to no good. What will happen to the good doctor?
