The Star Wars Canon Dispatch
Decmber 2017
Welcome to The Star Wars Canon Dispatch, an unofficial monthly contextual look at the monthly releases in Star Wars storytelling. Here is how the last month of 2017 panned out…
Del Rey
Released: December 5, 2017
Timeline: Around the time of Episode VII: The Force Awakens and VIII: The Last Jedi
This is a four-story collection, giving some back story and character to the Casino City of Canto Bight. Many of the locations and creatures seen in the film are expanded on in these stories. While overall its canon significance is negligible, it gives us some much-needed character about this location which was visited all too briefly in the film.
Darth Vader, Issue #009

Marvel Comics
Released: December 6, 2017
Timeline: After Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Darth Vader has found Jocasta Nu and the Grand Inquisitor fighting in the Jedi Archives. He stops the Inquisitor from dealing a fatal blow, and Jocasta uses this moment to slip away. This arc gives us more depth to this librarian figure and Vader’s early, conflicted development and the commitment to

Released: December 13, 2017
“The Trouble at Tibrin, Part II”

This is the second in a two-part story about a diplomatic mission Leia and Luke took to the planet Tibrin. A fun adventure showing us a bit more about their relationship before Hoth.
Tails from Wildspace: “The Best Pet”
Timeline: During Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
This is simply a fun piece about porgs, and how much trouble the creatures caused coming on to the Falcon when Chewbacca and Rey left their planet.

Released: December 13, 2017

Disney-Lucasfilm Press
Released: December 15, 2017
Timeline: Prior to Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
Rose and Page are a duo that is showing up a lot in future canon media, especially the Forces of Destiny series. This young adult novel leads up to the beginning of Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, and helps us fall in love with these characters even. Page may have only been in the film for a couple of minutes, but her impact on the canon will be immensely felt.
Doctor Aphra, Issue #015
Remasterd, Part II
Marvel Comics
Released: December 20, 2017
Timeline: After Episode IV: A New Hope
Doctor Aphra has really gotten herself into some trouble, as she has not become a servant to her former Assassin droids 0-0-0 and BT-1. There are many new players that come into the mix as we follow this infamous archaeologist through her crazy adventures.
Poe Dameron, Issue #020
Legend Found, Part III
Marvel Comics
Released: December 20, 2017
Timeline: Prior to Episode VII: The Force Awakens
General Leia Organa joins in the adventure as she teams up withe Poe on a mission to rescue her friend Lor San Tekka, who may know how to locate her brother, Luke Skywalker. We visit the planet of Cato Neimoidia, whose species we associate with the Trade Federation from the prequel era. Knowing exactly where Poe found San Tekka at the beginning of Episode VII, it will be interesting to see how these events continue to unfold.
Jedi of the Republic: Mace Windu, Issue #005
Marvel Comics
Released: December 27, 2017
Timeline: After Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Mace has finally come to the conclusion that the Jedi must fight to protect the peace, and that this war will not end quickly. This is against what they all believe the Jedi stand for, and a concept that we see the Jedi wrestle with all through out Clone Wars era stories. As this mini-series concludes, it shows us how Mace came to the conclusion that this path was the right path for the Jedi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi – The Storms of Crait
Marvel Comics
Released: December 27, 2017
Timeline: After Episode IV: A New Hope
In the recent film, we discovered the plant of Crait, a location of a former rebel base. Now we get to see the Rebel’s first visit to the planet, headed up by Luke Skywalker on his first mission with the rebellion where he is leading a team, which begins to earn him the ranks that he is identified with in the films (i.e. Commander Skywalker). This is a great way to get some backstory on the planet itself, and we find out a bit more on how Leia picked up where her father left off after Alderaan was destroyed.
