Autumn is my favorite time of year, and it doesn’t get any better than spending a Fall weekend in Utah at Salt Lake Comic Con. Salt Lake Comic Con 2017 is being held on Sept 21-23 and it is once again filled with Star Wars content. Whether you are a fan of the movies, the books, the animated series, the music, or everything in between, Salt Lake Comic Con has a panel and guest for you.
Paging General Syndulla! It was announced this week that Vanessa Marshall, the voice of Hera Syndulla of Star Wars Rebels, will be appearing at SLCC 2017. No individual panel for Vanessa has been announced yet, but hopefully that will come soon. Also, fans of the Star Wars animated series will definitely want to attend the Star Wars in Animation panel hosted by Bryan Young of the Full of Sith podcast and Jawa James Floyd. This panel will cover Star Wars Rebels, Forces of Destiny, and The Freemakers Adventures.
Pablo Hidalgo of the Lucasfilm story group will be hosting a series of Behind the…. panels, which will include Behind the Scenes of the Star Wars Prequels, Behind the Scenes of the Star Wars Cantina, and Behind the Scenes of Jabba’s Palace. He will also host a panel called Behind the Books, where he will discuss two of his books: Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide and Star Wars Propaganda. His final panel on Saturday will be 100 Things You Didn’t Know About Star Wars. Having attended Pablo’s panels at last year’s Salt Lake Comic Con, these are not to be missed.
Matt Martin, another member of the Lucasfilm story group, will also be a part of SLCC 2017 and will be on a wide ranging group of panels. The Galaxy’s Edge: Disney’s Star Wars Land panel will hopefully give Star Wars and Disney fans some insight into what we can expect from Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland. Matt will also be a panelist on the Twin Journeys panel, which will explore the history of the galaxies favorite twins, Luke and Leia.
Fans of Star Wars novels will be excited about appearances by Claudia Gray (Lost Stars, Bloodline, Leia), E.K. Johnston (Ahsoka), Michael Stackpole (I, Jedi; Rogue Squadron), and Timothy Zahn (Thrawn, Heir to the Empire). While all of these authors will appear on a variety of panels at SLCC, they can all be seen together on the Star Wars Books: The Empire Writes Back! panel that will be moderated by Jawa James Floyd on Saturday morning. There will be other panels focusing on Star Wars literature, including Star Wars at 40: Grand Admiral Thrawn and From a Certain Point of View, as well as individual author spotlights.
Saturday evening will offer the live recording of the Full of Sith podcast, with hosts Holly Frey and Bryan Young, both of whom will be taking part in several other panels throughout the weekend. Star Wars fans can wind down the weekend with The Music of Episode IV panel with David Collins on Saturday night. No one does a better job than David of analyzing the Star Wars music, its themes, and how it magnifies the saga.
Salt Lake Comic Con 2017 will also have panels covering many other fandoms, including Harry Potter, Star Trek, The Walking Dead, Marvel, DC, Game of Thrones and much, much more. And with the many vendors and celebrity picture and autograph opportunities Salt Lake Comic Con is fun for all fans. Salt Lake Comic Con is also one of the most well run conventions I’ve attended and the volunteers are very helpful. The entire schedule can be found at www.saltlakecomiccon.com.
With over 20 Star Wars panels packed into three days at Salt Lake Comic Con 2017, pre-planning your schedule will be important. It may be impossible to attend every Star Wars panel, but never tell a Star Wars fan the odds. So pack your green Jell-O and fry sauce, grab a diet caffeinated drink, and immerse yourself in Utah nerd culture at Salt Lake Comic Con 2017.
