This past week, Anthony Breznican shared a group of stories on Entertainment Weekly with all new information regarding Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is coming out this December. We learned more about the characters, including their names and what sort of purposes they serve, as well as a character from the small screen coming to the big screen. With all this intrigue and new information, what is there to glean about how this will impact the greater mythos while being a standalone film?
Rogue One is the first ever live-action Star Wars standalone film. Beyond having the standalone films not be serviced to the saga films which follow the Skywalker family story, they are allowed the freedom to explore other aspects and avenues within the Galaxy while also being able to more resemble other styles of film. Rogue One tells the story of the group of Rebel soldiers that steal the plans to the original Death Star which is described in the opening crawl to A New Hope.
From everything that has been released up until now, from the beginning stages of the planning of the film and the panel at last year’s Celebration in Anaheim with the director Gareth Edwards, all indications are pointing to this being the first true “war” film to take place in the Star Wars universe. Can a war film along the lines of Saving Private Ryan and We Were Soldiers or the HBO series Band of Brothers work inside of Star Wars? I think it is a resounding yes. The one thing that makes Star Wars ‘Star Wars’ is its sense of letting the story come from the characters and how they relate to one another as well as the audience. Rogue One will no doubt be able to do the same.
One of the questions that inevitably is coming up with the movie is “Why don’t we see any of these characters or weaponry/technology/Imperial military in the original trilogy?” On the surface level it seems like a pretty tough question to answer.
Next there is the representation of returning characters from the already existing Star Wars universe to Rogue One. In the first teaser trailer that came out back in the spring, we saw the inclusion of Mon Mothma, the famous Rebel leader first seen in Return of the Jedi. In one of the articles out from Mr. Breznican, he details how she will have a pretty large part in the film and her appearance in the teaser was not just for a cameo. It was confirmed that Darth Vader will be featured within the film but he will not be the main focus which, in my opinion, is a good thing. Having the Dark Lord featured heavily would absolutely distract and take away from the new characters to be introduced and reduce them to bit parts. There were Imperial Royal Guards seen in the first teaser trailer which is interesting because there hasn’t been an instance in the current canon where we have seen the Guards not with the Emperor.
So, what do you think is coming with Rogue One? Are you as hyped for it as me? (I am all aboard the hype-train currently!) Leave a comment below with your thoughts or email in!
