Well, things are definitely getting interesting when it comes to Star Wars literature! I have had the privilege of reading/listening to written by Daniel Jose Older. These new books are getting more similar to the old Legends style of writing. I felt myself lost in the story and emotionally connected like the days of old. The voice of Han and Lando in Last Shot remind me of conversations from the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Does something have to be “Legendsy” to be good? Absolutely not! However good storytelling always rises to the top. This book is a good story and it brings me back to the memories I have when I first read the good stories of the old timeline. That’s why I even bring up the topic of Legends. The truth is this story stands on its own.
takes place at three different places in the Canon timeline. The audiobook references the different positions in the chronology with three narrators. Marc Thompson, January LaVoy and new-comer to the Star Wars narrating galaxy, Daniel Jose Older. They all provide great emotion and passion. I must say this though, the fact that Older, the author, is narrating his own book is really a treat to listen to. I swear you can hear him smile as he is reading. He is so playful in his delivery that you can’t help but smile along with him.
Did I mention he wrote a killer story on top of all that? This tale, an artful use of the title kept me on the edge of my seat to the very last couple pages. I was so afraid the book was going to end one way but turned another direction. To be honest I would have been happy with either ending. I am being vague here because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. So you are going to have to read it yourself to understand what I am talking about. When you do I dare you to have more fun than the author does. I am not sure if that could be done but it’s Star Wars, you get points for trying.
